Equilibrium

Excellent movie now available on DVD. Rather obvious influences of Farenheit 451, 1984 and Brave New World, among others. I’ve heard people refer to it as Matrix-derivative, but I don’t see it; maybe some photography aspects, but aside from a similar “holy f*ck is that cool” vibe it’s really a very different film. Highly recommended. [...]

Ted Turner’s unsurprisingly blunt

My Beef with Big Media Ted Turner (rightly) points out what’s wrong with media consolidation and why it’s an increasingly dangerous situation, for all.

US DoD and Mercenaries?

THE MERCENARY VARIABLE – OUTSOURCED COMBAT IN IRAQ 1st time I’ve heard even a whiff of this. Yes, I (largely) trust this; link’s source was reliable. Read the article, troll around the site and judge for yourself. Long live the empire

Woohoo!

Reset my network, looks like all the rights bits are in place. Interested to test the wireless range, used to be fair-ish in the master bedroom and the kitchen. But I’ve got a few more things to install on the laptop first. I hate Windows. Not only is reinstalling ‘everything’ a huge pain, but data [...]

Got a new laptop from work to replace my old old — Dell Latitude D600 replacing a 2? year old Micron. The Dell’s lighter so I guess it’s better Also picked up Linksys’ WKPC54G (Wireless Kit for Notebooks) — 802.11g PCCard + router. $100 @ MicroCenter, the NIC alone was $70 so for +$30 I’m [...]

Marketing run amok

http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/07/03/033249&mode=thread&tid=109&tid=187&tid=98&tid=99 As a long time Quicken user, the last time I remember touching Microsoft Money was somewhere around 8 years ago, when I picked up a copy ‘dirt cheap’ for $9.99 to check out. [And afterwards I felt cheated] I’ve checked occasionally but haven’t found any reason to change my mind. If anything, I’ve found [...]
