This nifty utility shows detailed DLL load information, including order of load. Feed it command line parameters to run and generate report.html, or no parameters for a GUI dialog prompt. Sweet. Nice alternative to Dependency Walker (another nifty classic).

HP released the last iteration of the DEC Alpha chip. Nice hardware, bad business plan. Many lessions here, one of them being about doing business with Microsoft and another being corporate stupidity. Go look into how the Visual C++ 4.x subscription plan worked. Microsoft didn’t see the $ to bother with 4.1 or 4.2 for [...]

Informative set of posts about PAE, NX and /3GB behaviors on Windows. Detailed, and some non-obvious interactions all clearly explained. Recommended reading for technical folks. Yet more reasons to praise AMD for giving us a practical path to 64 bit computing…

Stumbled across this nifty utility. Think Windows CHARMAP.EXE, except portable and a serious consumer of modern steroids. Provides more details if you enable certain options, e.g. the UTF-8 info is a nice touch.

How do you like the new look? I played around with the WordPress style mechanism and some samples. What a pain, definitely not what I like to do with my day, but at least it’s working now. You can change the style from the menu at the botttom right. I also shifted the calendar up [...]

Apparently there’s a new version. I’ve seen bash 2.x for so long, I just assumed it was a finished dead (but very lively) end. Some of the enhancement (current and planned) sound like it’ll bring bash to an equal footing as the ‘latest’ (95?) korn shell. Which, personally, isn’t overly fascinating (it’s still an awkward [...]

Source code stolen from U.S. software company in India. Not a good thing — not for India, nor for the many U.S. businesses offshoring to India. Hey Sudan and Syria, enact strong IP laws and you could be the next India…

Joel on Software wrote some articles on employee ranking and titles and position and compensation, starting with this and followed by this. I’m not sure I agree with all of it, but certainly most. A followup has some additional material.

The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely, Positively Must Know About Unicode and Character Sets (No Excuses!) Excellent 1st primer if you don’t understand why Unicode is the one true way, and what that actually means.

My airconditioner stopped one night. The fan was running, but nothing cool. Good time of year for it, nothing like Georgia Summers (except maybe Florida Summers). The nice Mr. HVAC visited, problem was the ‘dual phase capacitor’ — boosts the power to the fan+condenser — was partially dead, working for the fan but nothing to [...]
