I’m the Manager of Development Engineering (i.e. software development) for the Kindle Application Platform. And yes, I’m hiring!. There’s a few other sub-groups in the Kindle group – Kindle Services, Kindle Application Services and Kindle Network Services. [Though none are quite as cool as Kindle Application Platform :-] Sorry, no office in Atlanta. But Seattle [...]

Sorry, Trulia is just a real estate search site that picked up my property. The actual house listing is http://3925forttrail.com/. Neat, huh?

Pieter Kriens interview includes his experiences trying to work with JSR 277 (Modules) and 294 (Superpackages), and his opinions of both. That jives with my experience with JSR 277 — very exclusionary, and (oddly) not interested in others’ experience or other input. Sounds great in concept, but both look to be a waste of time [...]

Interesting. I haven’t seen as much of JSR 294 as this analysis shows, but it jives with what I’ve seen to date. I’ve yet to see any reason to believe JSR 294 is anything other than a mistake (of the worst overengineered kind) and the (Java) world would be far better served embracing OSGi.

We’re renting a house while we sell our house in GA and learn the neighborhood. We’ll be here for a while so you can find us [...]

I saw this 2 weeks earlier in Atlanta. Not exactly what you expected at a Billy Joel concert but hot damn Chainsaw was good. One of the top highlights of the concert.

Most of these are common to many languages, but the last one (x.get() || y) is a handy Javascript notation that’s non-obvious to most coming from other languages.

“What did Javascript have that Java did not?” Ultimately, tight integration with and access to browser information, small ‘startup’ costs (fast initialization ‘near zero’), and adaptability (Javascripts dynamic nature is a plus here over Java’s static nature).

Here: I work for NASA (who coined the term “mission critical”) and we think it’s ready. The IBM A31p laptops onboard the Space Station were recently switched to Redhat. These are the laptops that command to the core computer system and control the vehicle, not just some random payload. Mission Control in Houston is in [...]

From the article: “The New York Times is reporting on how the NYSE group now feels that Linux is ‘mature enough’ for the New York Stock Exchange. They are using commodity x86 based Hewlett-Packard hardware and Linux in place of their traditional UNIX machines. From NYSE Euronext CIO Steve Rubinow: ‘We don’t want to be [...]

Google for “Blackberry” “PIN” and “Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce”, for instance http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/43376.html Unsurprising, really, but news apparently to many when it cropped up and was confirmed.
